New Block Day - Letters from Ex New Blockians about B-Day, 2004

Dear New Blockians, I was one of the ex newblockians who went to the hostel yesterday. It is after about 5 years or more I was going, and so was having a thought at the back of my mind about how will I fit in among a group of completely unknown and unseen faces. But the opportunity to walk in to the place where I spent the best few years of my life overcame the uncertainty and finally I was there in New Block though late at 7:45 in the evening. The warm and cordial welcome extended by the present boarders was more than enough to wipe away my initial fears of being out of place in the gathering. In a few moments I found to be sitting along with my brothers and waiting for the spirits that were on their way from Dasgupta's towards New Block. Among the old faces found Rana,Bata,Bhut and Suman doing the same thing. In the stage during this time, the ex blockians were called and were sharing their past experiences and updating the current boarders with the information sought from them.Rana and Bata saved me from saying too much on stage ,a task I most dread in doing. Eventually, the holy things arrived along with the van of the Jhinku. Time was very less, and the bottles reached the respective rooms within a short time along with the ones that are going to take care of them.

We were given Room No. 28, and bata was looking for the bottles he left behind,10 years ago.Arun joined the five us us. I was amazed to know the he scheduled his vacation from California such that he could attend the new block day. By the time we were done with round no 2, the drums started pounding from below and that started affecting our limbs in no time. Completing another round in haste, we dashed for the ground. The spirits were already high and people were euphoric at the sights and sounds of Jhinku on stage. Do not know how time passed since then. Meanwhile Suman and Rana took the stage and presented wonderful numbers which the crowd appreciated a lot. And they made way for the second round of singer and dancer. Also we frequented room no 28 in between at regular intervals to reach the nth round. Ultimately, in spite of repeated requests for another one, the singer called it a day, it was 1:00 AM. And, when I was passing Bengal lamp, realized that I had left the New Block T-Shirt in room no. 28.Most probably, Bata's one is giving it company. Hope I am not too elaborate on the events to bore you all. And looking forward to meet more of you in the next new block day. Regards, Anindya.
