Jarrod's Grammar Lesson for Those Who Need It

It has been said that the greatest thing about the World Wide Web is that it lets everyone be their own publishers. But I have discovered a major problem with this: apparently, nobody wants to be their own proofreaders.

After months of careful research consisting of surfing the web and reading newsgroups when I should have been doing actual work, I have managed to compile a short list of the most frequently misused words in web pages and Usenet articles. Mind you, people are generally spelling these words correctly; they are simply using the wrong words.

I have taken it upon myself to provide definitions for each of these words, along with examples of correct usage. The words are listed below in groups containing the other words with which they are often confused.

In joy!

Group #1

they're--They are.

their--Describes something belonging to "them."

there--In that place.

Example of correct usage: They're doing their thing there.

Group #2

you're--You are.

your--Describes something belonging to "you."

yore--Time past.

Example of correct usage: You're telling your tales of yore.

Group #3

two--The integer between one and three.

too--To an excessive degree; also.

to--A preposition indicating movement or an infinitive form of a verb.

toe--A digit found on one's foot.

Example of correct usage: Two toes are too few to have.

Hope that clears everything up!
