Obtain a Username/Password
In Lab1 all students attended have received a username/password to access machines located in the Computer Science Labs. After that the students have registered the username at https://www.cs.ucr.edu/ under the Students Section by clicking on the "Register fortune slip account" link.
Please notice that after registration your UCR ID cards will be enabled in order to access the CS Labs. You can also use you account as an email account (e.g yourusername@cs.ucr.edu).


Logging on to Lab Machines
To login from any lab machine follow the following procedure
  1. Make sure that the machine is rebooted in Windows NOT Linux.
    If it is booted in linux restart the machine and make sure to select "Windows NT" on the first menu that appears after reboot. (Note : You can also use your username/password to access the system under Linux but it is not recommended for novice users.
  2. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del once
  3. Type in your username & password
  4. Press enter to proceed
Personal Folder
To access my "Personal Folder" follow the following procedure:
  1. My Computer
  2. Choose 'myusername on whitney' icon
  3. This is your Personal Folder
Access to your Email
To access my email DO STEPS 1-5 ONLY ONCE and 6-12 every time
  1. Go to http://www.cs.ucr.edu/
  2. Select "Secure Shell" from the menu on the right
  3. Scroll down to putty.exe for Windows NT/98/85
  4. Select to download the file by pressing the "http" link
  5. Save this file to your "Personal Folder"

  6. Click on My Computer -> 'myusername on whitney' -> putty.exe
  7. Type in the host name textbox: "hill.ucr.edu"
  8. Make sure that ssh is selected NOT telnet ==> port=22
  9. Press Open
  10. Type in your username & password
  11. Write on the console "pine"
  12. Try to see what kind of options do you hav from the bottom of the black window e.g "^X" means press concurrently Ctrl+X or "E" means simply press E
Logging out from the Lab Machines
You should always logout from the lab machines in order to keep your personal data secure. Follow the following procedure each time!
  1. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del once.
  2. Press Logoff
