Background

I made this is mozilla skin about 3 months ago as a tweaked version of Bamm Gabriana's ieskin. It was never intended for public release because I thought Bamm would complete his small icons version, but when I contacted him, he said he was having problems with his isp, and was accessing the internet from a public computer. He gave me permission to release the skin under a different name, but since I don't know how to make an installer for .jar files, I just posted it under its original file name. The only reason why I am releasing an unfinished version is because I am currently too busy to finish the skin.

Features

I redesigned all of the mozilla navigator icons (I haven't yet added my modified outlook icons to mozilla mail yet) based on my favorite small 2k and xp icons, and then modified the toolbar.css file appropriately to fit the smaller dimensions. I also changed the way some of the icons looked from the originals based on personal preference. I appropriately rewrote the home toolbar support for the skin as well.

Compatability

So far, it only works for Mozilla 1.1, although I am interested in porting the skin to Mozilla 1.2 / 1.2.1.

Screenshot(s)

Focused just on the toolbar to save memory. Note that the screenshot was taken under Windows 2000 with WindowBlinds, which is why the toolbars do not skin properly. This is not an error in the skin. In Windows XP, using either WindowBlinds or Styles, I found that the toolbars (also the scrollbars) skinned correctly. I'm amused by the fact that the png image was smaller than the jpg image. Normally, jpgs are much smaller due to lossy compression. Neato.

Download

Simply right click here and select "Save Link Target As" (I assume that you are using the Mozilla browser given that this is a mozilla skin) or "save target as" (in ie) to download the skin. I apologize for not yet making a jar installer script.

Installation

Since this is a tweaked version of Bamm's skin, and is not yet a release version, I have not yet made an installation script like mozdev.org (I haven't released it there yet, the skin is alpha) The first step of installation is to install the official skin. It must be the file bamm-ieskin.jar, not ieskin.jar. Next, close mozilla, (Make sure the process mozilla.exe is closed when you do this) and then delete his version of the bamm-ieskin.jar and replace it with the version on my site. I will provide an installer for this later, but I am pressed for time as a college student and I have been unable to add such functionality to my site. (If anyone could help me with this I would really appreciate it)

Future

If anyone is interested, I am looking towards adding office xp style menus to the skin, any help would be appreciated. Also, if there are mistakes in the skin, PLEASE help me fix them if you know how to fix them. I think my toolbar buttons MIGHT be crooked but they look okay on my primary computer so I don't know. I was also having problems with the horizontal toolbar alignment. Given the fact that I haven't tested this skin on my secondary computer, it might have a variety of glitches.

Porting

I plan to port this skin to 1.2 / 1.2.1 but it will take some time due to my less-than-adequate knowlege of xul and mozilla. Not only is xul hard to master, but each version of mozilla breaks skin compatability. (I thought this browser was about standards???) For this reason, I still hold a very critical view of the mozilla development team as far as the gui is concerned. Honestly, I just wish that they would opt for platform specific GUI's as in Galeon.

Modifications

If you make any modifications to the skin, please send me your version. (I want to learn more about xul) You are welcome to release the skin if Bamm permits you to do so, but otherwise, if you use the icons I made, give proper credit to Microsoft (for copyright reasons) and to me (since I modified them) To summarize, give me credit for the modifications, (UPDATE: I don't even require attribution for the skin any more, now my contributions are public domain -- this doesn't necessarily include Bamm's work) give Bamm credit for the base skin, and give Microsoft credit for the original icons.

Contact

(UPDATE: I don't put my contact info on my page any more due to excessive spam. I'll soon change this when I make an imagemap of my address.) Tell me what you think about the skin, I love feedback!

Copyright

I place my changes to the Microsoft icons in the public domain if it is legally possible. (I'm really not sure if it can be done). I take no responsibility for any trademarks violated in the process of creating this skin. The skin is for personal use only. It is not a released version. I am simply providing it for the sake of those who want small icons in Mozilla. Internet Explorer is a trademark of Microsoft Corporation.

Enjoy the skin, and check out the rest of my page.
